Charity Navigator is a rating service that evaluates US nonprofits. Many people turn to Charity Navigator to find out where to donate money. We used Google Analytics to report web traffic by time and location, then mapped these data to US counties using R, BigQuery, and public APIs. By controlling for population structure and short-term traffic trends, we were able to observe how and where our users respond to holidays, crises, and other events. In this talk, I will walk through the steps involved, and explore some striking results.

David Bruce Borenstein is Lead Data Scientist at Charity Navigator, a leading watchdog group for nonprofits. Prior to joining CN, he held analysis roles in the social and biological sciences. He holds a PhD in Quantitative and Computational Biology from Princeton University. - bsocially
