El acúfeno es la percepción de un sonido continuo en un oído, en ambos o en la cabeza, que no proviene de ninguna fuente externa. Este ruido se percibe más durante los periodos de silencio ambiental como lo es la noche, pero basta poner atención para percibir que siempre está ahí.
Las causas más comunes del acúfenos o tinnitus son: edad, ansiedad, eposición a ruidos intensos., uso de medicamentos como aspirina y otros que pueden dañar el nervio auditivo, consumo excesivo de cafeína y alcohol, obstrucción del canal auditivo externo, infecciones del oído medio, anomalías de los huesecillos del oído medio o una perforación del tímpano y algunas anormalidades del oído interno, o tumores que presionen el nervio auditivo.
